Everything you need to know about your vascular ultrasound examination

What to Expect During Your Examination

A vascular ultrasound is a painless, non-invasive examination that uses sound waves to create images of your blood vessels. The procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on the type of examination.

During the examination, a clear gel will be applied to your skin, and a small hand-held device called a transducer will be moved over the area being examined. You may be asked to change positions or hold your breath briefly at times to obtain the best images.

The examination room will be quiet and comfortable. Feel free to ask questions at any time during your examination – we're here to make sure you feel informed and at ease.

How to Prepare

For Most Examinations:

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
  • Continue taking all regular medications unless instructed otherwise
  • No special preparation is usually required

For Abdominal Vascular Studies:

  • Fast for 6-8 hours before your examination (water is allowed)
  • Avoid carbonated drinks the day before

Important: Your referring doctor will provide specific instructions if any special preparation is needed for your examination. Please follow those instructions carefully.

What to Bring

  • Your referral letter from your doctor
  • Medicare card and any private health insurance details
  • List of current medications
  • Previous imaging results or reports, if available
